Summer Palace

A glimpse of the beauty of ancient Chinese imperial gardens

In December 1998, the Summer Palace (Chinese name: 颐和园) was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Summer Palace is the largest existing royal garden in China, covering an area of 3.009 square kilometers, with water accounting for about three-quarters of it. It is full of traditional Chinese culture and is one of the must-see destinations for tourists on their Beijing journey.

Gate leading to the Tower of Buddist Incense in the Summer Palace

The natural beauty of the Summer Palace is mesmerizing. The blue waves of Kunming Lake are rippling and the water is crystal clear. When the breeze blows, the lake surface ripples and sparkles. The weeping willows by the lake, willow branches dancing with the wind. The rolling hills in the distance, and the lake reflect each other, constituting a beautiful landscape painting. We chose to visit Kunming Lake by boat to enjoy the beauty of the Yiheyuan from another angle. Sitting on the boat, feeling the breeze, the mood is extraordinarily comfortable. Along the way, you can see the 17-hole bridge, the Buddhist incense pavilion and other famous attractions, each with a unique charm.

Been there, it's really beautiful! Fun fact, the number of gargoyles on the corners of the roof indicates the importance of the building (so most of the buildings in palaces, forbidden city, etc. have different numbers of them)

I was there....you really need two FULL days to see everything. The place is HUGE !! The splendor and beauty are unimaginable ! I actually prefer Summer Palace to Forbidden City bc of the gorgeous landscaping. Stay and watch one of the most beautiful sunsets you'll ever see (stand near near the long corridors to get the best view). Such beauty is simply breathtaking!

Local tourists from China

The weather was so hot that I couldn't fully explore the Summer Palace. It's just too large. Luckily, I could take a boat across Kunming Lake straight to the exit, which saved me from walking. You can also visit Nanhu Island and see the Seventeen-Arch Bridge from our school textbooks.
However, the afternoon tea was a bit disappointing. The 198 yuan set was neither tasty nor enjoyable, but I guess the main appeal was just having the experience of having tea at the Summer Palace. I strongly recommend not visiting during the peak summer heat; wait until it cools down for a much better experience!
The scenery at the Yiheyuan is as beautiful as a painting and looks great in photos. The Long Corridor was packed with tourists resting on it. It was so hot that we had to find places to rest frequently to avoid heatstroke. So, visiting when it’s cooler is definitely the way to go!

The Summer Palace is huge! It was so exhausting that I couldn't keep going. I came with my family, and since the place is so big, we forgot which entrance we used. We ended up exiting near the Seventeen-Arch Bridge. If you're planning to visit, make sure to do some research beforehand; otherwise, you might not get to see most of the sights. We were short on time and only managed to explore half of it. The day we went was cloudy, so the photos didn’t turn out very well, but the scenery was beautiful everywhere you looked.

It's no wonder this is called the emperor's private garden—it's enormous! With its greenery, long corridors, and pavilions, every step reveals a new beautiful scene, like walking through a painting. You can also take a boat ride that goes underneath the Seventeen-Arch Bridge. After spending three hours exploring, we hadn't even made it halfway through the Summer Palace. To fully enjoy it, you'll need a whole day! Be sure to keep replenishing your energy and stay hydrated while you explore.
