Jiefangbei

The most prosperous commercial center in downtown Chongqing

The Liberation Monument, also known as Jiefangbei, is the only monument in China that commemorates the victory of the Chinese people in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. It stands as a witness to Chongqing’s liberation history.

The construction of the Liberation Monument began in 1941, originally called the “Spirit Fortress” to inspire the public to resist foreign aggression. After the victory in 1945, various social groups proposed establishing a memorial to commemorate the war victory, honoring history and the sacrifices of heroes. In 1950, after renovations and renaming, it became the People’s Liberation Monument, symbolizing the determination of the Chinese people to pursue peace, freedom, and liberation.

Practical Travel Tips

  1. Don’t buy the red fruit sold around Jiefangbei; it’s expensive and not tasty.
  2. Most of Chongqing’s food is spicy, so if you can’t handle the heat or have a sensitive stomach, ask the owner for “mild spice” when ordering. You can show the restaurant owner these three Chinese characters: “微微辣” (which means “mild spice”).

Local tourists from China

Jiefangbei’s position in Chongqing is comparable to the Oriental Pearl Tower in Shanghai, Tiananmen Square in Beijing, or the Canton Tower in Guangzhou. It’s always crowded with people. I stayed nearby and could easily walk here after dinner. There are many restaurants serving Chongqing snacks, along with shopping malls and cinemas. It’s a must-visit spot for anyone traveling to Chongqing—definitely not to be missed!

It takes about 7-8 minutes to walk from Hongya Cave to Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street, which is always packed with people. Right next to it is Bayi Food Street, where you can find a dazzling variety of spicy dishes everywhere. There are also plenty of shopping malls, one after another, making it hard to decide where to shop!

The area around Jiefangbei is a bustling commercial district, filled with shopping centers, restaurants, and snack streets. We spent the whole day here enjoying shopping and delicious food. In the nearby snack street, we tried many authentic Chongqing dishes like sour and spicy noodles, Shan City dumplings, and wontons, all of which were incredibly tasty.
The monument itself is historically significant, towering impressively, with a beautifully designed surrounding square. We took plenty of photos in front of it for memories. At night, the light show near Jiefangbei is spectacular, lighting up the entire area and making it a great spot for families.
The only downside is the large crowds, especially on weekends and holidays, which can feel a bit overwhelming. I recommend visiting during off-peak times to avoid the rush.

Really, avoid Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street during holidays! Especially on New Year's Day, there are just way too many people. I went there once on New Year's, and I’ve never seen so many people in my life. It was so crowded that we could barely move, and there was no phone signal at all because of the crowd!
