How Visitors Rate the Ciqikou Ancient Town

Local tourists from China

For the Mid-Autumn Festival, my husband and I traveled to Chongqing. On the first afternoon, we decided to visit Ciqikou Historic Town, which he highly recommended. It wasn't very crowded that day, so we had a great time without the hassle of pushing through crowds. The area is quite large, and it took us over three hours to explore. There were plenty of stalls offering free samples of Mahua, and the shop owners were really generous. We enjoyed walking around, eating and drinking. The scenery is charming, with cobblestone streets and ancient buildings, giving us a unique experience. It’s a wonderful spot, and I look forward to visiting again!

It's a big place with ancient houses to explore and lots of Chongqing snacks, all available for free tasting. It’s even more beautiful at night when there are crowds, and vendors selling freshly made hot pot broth fill the air with the spicy aroma. I kept sneezing from the strong smell, haha! There are plenty of souvenir shops along the street. It feels like you’re constantly going uphill with many steps, which could be tough for older folks. I spent about three hours just wandering around, but I felt like I could explore all day. I bought some tomato-flavored Mahua to take home, and my parents loved it!

On the first day of my trip to Chongqing, after visiting Hongya Cave, I went to Ciqikou to explore. It was lightly raining when I arrived, and there was a singer playing guitar and singing on the terrace of a café. I really wanted to sit down there and enjoy the rain and the music. I got so absorbed in listening that I just stood there, but he only sang one song and then stopped. We had a meal of Chongqing hot pot in the area, and it was really spicy!

Ciqikou Ancient Town is a really interesting place. My first impression was that almost every shop sells chili peppers, Sichuan peppercorns, and hot pot broth. I visited around noon, and since it wasn't a holiday, there weren't many people. The transportation is convenient with the metro, so I recommend checking it out when you visit Chongqing. As soon as you walk into the Ciqikou Scenic Area, you’re hit with the smell of hot pot—it's both fragrant and spicy, haha!
